Should more troops be sent to Afghanistan?
Gordon Brown has announced plans to send 500 more troops to Afghanistan but only if key conditions are met. Is this the right decision? The prime minister said that troops will be sent as long as they have the necessary equipment, if other Nato allies boost their troop numbers, and if more Afghan troops are trained.
The UK currently has about 9,000 soldiers in the country, the second-largest contingent after the US. To date, there have been 221 deaths among UK forces in Afghanistan and the PM has faced some calls to bring troops home.
The BBC's Newsnight has been told US President Barack Obama may announce a substantial surge in US troops to Afghanistan. However, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed the report.
Is a boost in UK troops a good move? Do you agree with the conditions attached? Will the increase make any difference to the overall strategy? Should other allies send more troops to Afghanistan?
