Would you cheat the system for a school place?

Tougher action should be taken against the thousands of parents who lie to get their children into popular schools, England's school places watchdog says. How far would you go to get a place for your child?

On his report, Schools Adjudicator Ian Craig said an estimated 3,500 parents lied on school application forms each year.

The report suggests local authorities should use all means open to them to deter parents from cheating the admissions system, including removing places from the guilty and pursuing them through the courts, possibly using the Perjury Act.

Although Dr Craig said currently people had "nothing to lose" if they lied to get a place, he stopped short of calling for school place fraud to be made a crime.

The UK economy unexpectedly contracted by 0.4% between July and September, according to official figures, meaning the country is still in recession.

It is the first time UK gross domestic product (GDP) has contracted for six consecutive quarters, since quarterly figures were first recorded in 1955.

But the figures could still be revised up or down at a later date, because this figure is only the first estimate.

GDP measures the total amount of goods and services produced by a country.

Should more troops be sent to Afghanistan?

Gordon Brown has announced plans to send 500 more troops to Afghanistan but only if key conditions are met. Is this the right decision?

The prime minister said that troops will be sent as long as they have the necessary equipment, if other Nato allies boost their troop numbers, and if more Afghan troops are trained.

The UK currently has about 9,000 soldiers in the country, the second-largest contingent after the US. To date, there have been 221 deaths among UK forces in Afghanistan and the PM has faced some calls to bring troops home.

The BBC's Newsnight has been told US President Barack Obama may announce a substantial surge in US troops to Afghanistan. However, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed the report.

Ms Lane Fox, the UK's Digital Inclusion Champion, is trying to get Britain's four million poorest citizens to sign up to the internet. She said many do not realise that being online can save them money and boost lifetime earnings.

Speaking on the BBC's HARDtalk programme, she said there are still 10 million people in the UK who have never used the internet. She added that she believes it will not be possible to be a proper citizen in future without being online.

At least 41 people have been killed in a bombing near Swat valley in north-west Pakistan. What can the government do to prevent further attacks?

The explosion hit a security convoy in Shangla district - an area the military said it had retaken from militants.
